As a specialist in the Insolvency area, involving receiverships, liquidations, investigations and monitoring assignments, I have a keen understanding of the pressures many businesses face. I worked in insolvency and audit at Deloittes in the 1980s in Auckland and Melbourne before joining Peat Marwick Mitchell (now KPMG) back in Tauranga in 1987 – in time for the sharemarket crash. After 10 years with KPMG I took a year off to act as a military observer in Lebanon and the Golan Heights. I returned to KPMG until 2001, when I was invited to join what was then Rodewald Hart and Associates Limited. In my time I must have handled more than a thousand receiverships and/or liquidations in my name, and helped out on hundreds of others. My Insolvency skills were honed in Auckland, Melbourne and Tauranga with the Big 4 firms, but only after I had experienced the business world first hand. I arrived in Tauranga from Hawke’s Bay as a six-year-old and went to school in Otumoetai, rounding off my final year at Auckland Grammar. After some overseas travel, and a good working holiday around New Zealand, I signed up with the Territorial Army, eventually retiring as Lieutenant Colonel and a former Commanding Officer of the local Hauraki Regiment, 34 years later. I still visit the base and am past president and current treasurer of the BOP Officers Club. I support local junior rugby as honorary auditor for the Tauranga Rugby Sports JMC. I am also the current treasurer for the local branch of the National Party. After a spell in insurance with AMP I worked as a management trainee at Westfield Freezing Works in Auckland for three years in the 1970s, studying part time for a BCom degree at Auckland University, and graduating in 1981, by which time I had married. My real-world business experience enables me to recognise the signs of a business in trouble and my hands-on working experience gives me the ability to formulate a precise plan of action. The workload has taken us into most business sectors, including retail, manufacturing, service sector and farms. We strive to trade the afflicted business on for as long as we can, working closely with its staff and other interested parties. I enjoy dealing with the real-time changes and challenges that are part of insolvency work.
